Tropical Fruit Wines
To visit de Brueys Boutique Wines, travel through a rural landscape past historic tobacco barns, sugar cane fields and rich fertile plains where mangoes, paw paws, coffee, macadamia nuts, pineapples, cashews, bananas and a whole banquet of crops flourish.
The Tropical Fruit Winery is located on a 16 hectare mango orchard in northern Queensland on the Cairns Highlands/Atherton Tablelands, cradled between the peaks of the Great Dividing Range in the high, wide valley of the Barron River, near Mareeba. Use our getting here directions to show you the way.
Bob and Elaine de Brueys
Bob and Elaine de Brueys are the owners and managers of this exciting enterprise. They moved to the Mareeba property from Cairns in the late nineties, after the last of their three children flew the nest.
Bob had been the production manager and maintenance manager of the Cairns Coca Cola bottling plant prior to its closure in 1990.
In the Beginning
The de Brueys’ intention was semi retirement — growing mangoes for the fresh fruit market. However even then Bob’s thoughts had turned to wine making, with the procurement of stainless steels tanks from the closed down Coke plant.
The property was first established by Bob and Elaine as a mango orchard in 1990, with the shed and house being built by 1992. The first mangoes were harvested in 1993, fetching good prices. Unfortunately price decreases followed with fluctuations in the market continuing.
By 1999 their thoughts turned again to making wine. They began to plant tropical fruit trees to provide fruit for the wines they were planning. Such trees included jaboticaba, lychee, mulberry and bush cherry trees.
Wine production began, and plans were drawn up for the expansion, which is now almost complete.
The Cellar Door opened for business in July 2003, with several wines available for tasting and sale. Gradually, over the following years, more wines have been added to the range as well as fruit ports and liqueurs.
The Next Stage
In order to complete the facility, Stage Two of the project commenced in 2005, beginning with the excavation of the underground wine cellar. The new Cellar Door and function centre has been constructed over the wine cellar.
When complete, de Brueys Boutique Winery will be able to cater for private functions and weddings.
Stage 2 comprises the following facilities:
- A 100 seat function centre
- Open-air deck and dining area, which will cater for functions, including weddings, local events, afternoon teas
- A gazebo wedding chapel
- Water feature
- Landscaping
- Small exclusive walking trails
Why Mareeba?
Mareeba is an ideal centre in which to establish a Winery, for a number of reasons:
- The area is renowned for its abundance and availability of tropical fruits
- It is very close to the international airport and tourist centre of Cairns (50 minutes away by car)
- Because of Mareeba’s elevation high on the tablelands to the west of Cairns (500m), its Mediterranean type climate (dry heat and cool nights) is an ideal place in which to live
